A Community Bike Park for all ages and abilities

Welcome to Richmond Bike Skills Park

Richmond Bike Skills Park is an exciting new community project designed to provide a dedicated space for riders of all ages and skill levels. With no similar facilities nearby—the closest being a 45-minute drive away—this park fills a vital gap for local biking enthusiasts and those wanting to spend time being active, outdoors.

Inspired by the successful Devil’s Toenail project in Wetherby, our goal is to create a free-to-access bike park that has the community ethos of a play park—only with skills trails instead of swings and slides!

  • 1. What's the plan?

Richmond Bike Skills Park is a community-driven project designed to bring an exciting, free-to-access biking facility to the area. Currently, there are no similar parks nearby, with the closest alternative being a 45-minute drive away. This project was inspired by the Devil’s Toenail community bike park in Wetherby and developed by a local parent who saw the need for a dedicated space for riders of all ages and abilities.

Our plan is to create a safe, inclusive, and accessible bike skills park where riders can build confidence, develop their abilities, and simply enjoy biking in a fun, welcoming environment. The trails will be progressive and challenging, catering to both beginners and experienced riders, with features that encourage skill development and a love for the sport.

The park will be designed to blend with its natural surroundings, offering a green and inviting space that promotes outdoor activity and supports both mental and physical well-being. Like a play park—but built for bikes—it will be completely free to use.

  • 2. Where will it be?

We are thrilled to have secured a fantastic location on the outskirts of Richmond Town, thanks to the generous support of Zetland Estates. The site, accessible from Green Howards Road and Whashton Road, will be easy to reach by bike, on foot, or by car.

  • 3. Who is it for?

Richmond Bike Skills Park is for everyone—whether you’re a complete beginner, a young rider, or an experienced cyclist looking to develop your skills.

    • Young riders & beginners – A safe, fun space to learn the basics, build confidence, and develop bike-handling skills.
    • Intermediate & advanced riders – Progressive challenges to push your skills further, with features designed to promote technique and progression.
    • Families & the local community – A free, welcoming outdoor space where parents, children, and friends can enjoy riding together.
    • Schools & groups – A resource for cycling clubs, school programs, and community groups looking to promote active lifestyles.
    • Visitors from further afield – While primarily for Richmond residents, the park will also attract riders from surrounding areas who want a high-quality, purpose-built biking facility.

The park is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with trails that cater to all abilities and ages, encouraging more people to experience the joy of biking. Whether you’re here to ride, learn, or just enjoy the outdoor environment, Richmond Bike Skills Park is for you!

  • 4. Why it matters

This project isn’t just about biking—it’s about creating a healthy, active outdoor space for the community. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a young rider, or an experienced cyclist, this park will offer something for everyone. Our goal is to get more people riding, more often, and to provide a space where families, friends, and individuals can connect, progress, and enjoy the thrill of biking.

We’re excited to bring this vision to life—stay tuned, get involved, and help make it happen!

  • 5. How much will it cost?

The estimated cost for a full design and build of Richmond Bike Skills Park is £250,000. However, we aim to reduce this figure as much as possible by involving the community, securing grants, sponsorships, and using volunteer support.

  • 6. How can I help?

This is where you come in! Whether it's through fundraising, offering skills and materials, or simply spreading the word, community involvement is key to making this project a reality.

We’re currently working through different phases of development, with more details to come on Phases 3-5.

CLB Heritage were pleased to the planning application process through provision of a Heritage Impact Assessment. Such assessments are a requirement of applications where there is a likely impact upon the significance or setting of a designated or non-designated heritage asset. The Site lies within the Richmond Conservation Area and within the setting of a variety of heritage assets, but namely Richmond Castle which is a key heritage asset within the landscape. As a keen cyclist and Secretary of Richmond Cycling Club, I am pleased to support the project and hope it will encourage the participation of young people into cycling.

We’re thrilled to support Richmond Bike Skills Park by donating the website for this fantastic community project. As a local business, we know how important it is to have safe, accessible outdoor spaces where families can be active together.

The idea of having a dedicated place to take my kids riding—away from traffic and in a purpose-built, fun environment—is something I am personally really excited about. This park will be a huge asset to the community, and we can’t wait to see it come to life. We’re proud to play a small part in making it happen!

I saw Louises campaign on Facebook and just had to offer my services to help the project raise awareness with a leaflet. The town greatly needs such things for the younger generation as there’s very little recreational opportunities locally. Can’t wait to try it out too!
